Mother Annie Bryant Thorpe was born Sunday, September 8, 1929, to the parentage of the late Mr. Andrew Bryant and Mrs. Rosa Bryant right here in her beloved hometown of Jeffersonville, GA.
Annie, as she was affectionately called by her parents and siblings, was educated in the Twiggs County Educational System and later, Antioch Seminary Schools. It was there that she realized education was her passion and would continue its joy later on in life.
In 1947 she married the love of her life, the late LeRoy Thorpe, Sr., and they remained here at home, in Twiggs County where they treasured their love and life by parenting their four children. Her love for her family would spread far and wide and those who met her, even once, fell in love with her smile, and she became “Granny” to many.
She would explore other career opportunities such as Standard Drug Company as a clerk, and as a dietician with Dr. Gotea however, her passion for education, love for children and her hometown, would lead her to an extensive career with the Twiggs County School System, as a paraprofessional.
Mother Thorpe accepted the Lord as her savior and devoted her time and joy with the First Baptist Church of Jeffersonville. She would be seen Sunday mornings dressed elegantly with her hat, shoes, and purse to match as she traveled to service to serve as an usher, choir member, Sunday School teacher, and later, the church Mother.
When not serving her beloved church ministry or the school system, you would find that Ms. Annie B. Thorpe was an active member and servant of the NAACP, Twiggs County Zoning and Planning Committee, and lest we never forget her Sisterhood with the Zion Chapter #88 Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, the late LeRoy Thorpe, Sr., her son, the late LeRoy Thorpe, Jr., her parents, her siblings, Carrie Mae Stephens, Mary Ellen Bryant, and Amanda Glover.
She was known for traveling with her grandson wherever he would be preaching, whether near or far, dancing and praising God. She was also known for traveling to numerous churches to give heartfelt welcomes and occasions. She also served as a Honorary Mother at Calvary Hill Baptist Church. She had a love for animals and cooking big dinners to bring her family together. She was also a Founding Member of Paschal Memorial Funeral chain.
To honor her life and legacy, she leaves to cherish her loving memory to her loving and devoted daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Alfred Dempsey, two sons, Gregory Thorpe, and Phelan Thorpe. Eight grandchildren, Loving and devoted best friend Rev. Randy J. Paschal, (whom she raised as her own), Yolanda (Hansel) Paschal-Jordan, Shameyum Paschal, Gregory (Rosetta) Thorpe, Tamara (Gregory) Thorpe-Foster, Phelan Thorpe, NeCourtney Thorpe and Phillip Thorpe. Nine great grandchildren and Two great-great grandchildren. A god-daughter: April Bryant Ray.
